What You’ll Need
- 1 pack of puff pastry
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Puff pastry is readily available in most grocery stores, and it’s a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of sweet and savory recipes. You can also make homemade puff pastry if you’re feeling adventurous, but for this recipe, we’ll be using the store-bought version for convenience.
Preparing the Dough
1. Start by thawing the puff pastry according to the package instructions. It’s important that the pastry is completely thawed but still cold.
2. Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Aim for a size of approximately 9×18 inches.
3. Carefully spread the softened butter evenly over the entire surface of the puff pastry.
Shaping the Croissants
1. Begin by folding the pastry in thirds, like a letter. The bottom third should fold up over the middle third, and then the top third should fold down over the other two layers.
2. Rotate the folded dough 90 degrees so that the shorter end is facing you.
3. Roll out the dough again into a rectangle, following the same thickness and size as before.
4. Repeat the folding process—fold the bottom third up and the top third down, like a letter. This step helps create those beautiful layers in the croissants.
5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or overnight. Chilling the dough is crucial as it allows the butter to firm up, resulting in better flakiness.
Baking the Croissants
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Take the chilled dough out of the refrigerator and roll it out to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Cut the dough into triangles, making the base of each triangle equal to the desired width of your croissant.
3. Starting from the base of each triangle, roll the dough towards the tip, keeping the layers of the pastry on the outside. Shape them into the classic croissant form.
4. Place the croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them for expansion.
5. Brush each croissant with beaten egg to give them a gorgeous golden color.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the croissants are puffed up and golden brown.
7. Allow the croissants to cool on a wire rack before serving. Delight in the heavenly smell and enjoy your freshly baked, homemade croissants!
These homemade croissants are best enjoyed warm with a pat of butter, your favorite jam, or as a base for sandwiches. With practice, you’ll become a master at making this French delicacy right in your own kitchen. Bon appétit!
