Ingredients:
– 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup sugar
– 1 tsp salt
– 1 packet active dry yeast
– 1/2 cup warm water
– 1/4 cup oil (such as vegetable or canola oil)
– 1/4 cup milk
– 1 egg, beaten
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled
Method:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Mix well and make a well in the center.
2. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the yeast and warm water. Let it sit for a few minutes until the yeast has activated.
3. Add the oil, milk and beaten egg to the activated yeast mixture. Mix well.
4. Pour the wet ingredients into the well created in the dry ingredients. Mix well until a dough forms.
5. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for at least 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
6. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rest in a warm place for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.
7. While the dough is rising, you can prepare the butter. Cut it into thin slices and arrange them on a piece of plastic wrap in a rectangular shape. Cover it with another piece of plastic wrap and use a rolling pin to flatten it into a rectangle. Place it in the fridge to chill.
8. Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
9. Take the chilled butter out of the fridge and peel off the plastic wrap. Place the butter in the center of the dough rectangle and fold the sides of the dough over the butter, overlapping them in the middle. Press the edges together to seal in the butter.
10. Turn the folded dough over and use a rolling pin to roll it out into a rectangle again, about 1/4 inch thick.
11. Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter, and then turn it 90 degrees. Repeat the rolling and folding process once more.
12. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle again, about 1/4 inch thick. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into triangles.
13. Roll each triangle up tightly, starting from the wide end and rolling towards the pointed end. Place the croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
14. Brush the croissants with beaten egg and let them rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
15. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Bake the croissants for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
And that’s it! With this simple recipe, you can make delicious croissants at home with very little butter. Serve them warm with a cup of coffee or tea for the perfect breakfast treat. Bon appétit!
