First Things First: Gather Your Fabrics and Supplies
Before you start making your tunic, you need to gather all the necessary fabrics and supplies. You will need:
• Two yards of linen, cotton, or muslin fabric
• Scissors
• A sewing machine
• Measuring tape
• Pins
• Thread of your choice (matching with the fabric)
• Chalk or fabric marking pen
• A ruler
Step 1: Measure the Fabric Length
Firstly, measure from your shoulders to your knees and add two inches to this length. This is the length of the fabric you need to purchase.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Use your measuring tape, chalk or fabric marking pen, and ruler to mark and cut out the fabric to the exact length you require. This will form the body of the tunic.
Step 3: Create the Neck Hole
Fold the fabric in half, ensuring that the shoulders are aligned properly. Then use chalk or the fabric marking pen to create a V shape on the fabric’s folded corner. Make sure the V-shape is wide enough to fit your head through comfortably.
Now that you have created a V shape, cut it out. This forms the neck hole in the center of your fabric. Once you are done cutting, unfold the fabric to see the V-shaped hole you created.
Step 4: Cut and Sew the Sleeves
Now it’s time to create the sleeves for your tunic. Cut two rectangular pieces of fabric that are approximately 12 inches wide and 24 inches long. You can adjust the length of your sleeves as per your preference.
Fold one of the rectangular fabrics widthwise, with the right sides facing each other, ensuring that the short sides are aligned. Then sew the sides together with a seam allowance of around 1/2 inch.
Once you have sewn both of the sleeves, turn them right side out and slide them into the tunic’s armholes, ensuring that the sewn areas of the sleeves and tunic align.
Step 5: Sew the Tunic Sides Together
After inserting the sleeves, it’s time to sew the tunic’s sides. First, fold the fabric lengthwise with the right sides facing towards each other and pin it on the sides to ensure it stays in place.
Then sew the sides of the tunic’s armholes all the way down to the bottom. Then sew the sides of the sleeve on both sides, close to the body.
Step 6: Finish the Hems
Once you’ve completed all the sewing, make sure to go over all hems and give your tunic a professional finish. Fold the bottom and sleeves of the fabric up to around an inch and sew a hem around the edge.
