Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies:
- Fabric (choose a lightweight fabric for a flowy tunic or a thicker fabric for a cozy tunic)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Tape measure
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread if hand-stitching)
- Iron
- Buttons or other embellishments (optional)
Measure and Cut
Start by measuring yourself or the person for whom you’re making the tunic. Take the following measurements:
- Bust circumference
- Waist circumference
- Hip circumference
- Shoulder width
- Tunic length (from shoulder to desired length)
Once you have your measurements, use them to create a pattern on a large piece of paper or directly on the fabric. Cut out the pattern, making sure to add seam allowances.
Assemble and Sew
Once you have your fabric pieces, it’s time to assemble and sew your tunic. Start by pinning the front and back pieces together at the shoulders, right sides facing each other. Sew along the pinned edge using a straight stitch. Press the seam open with an iron.
Next, pin and sew the side seams, leaving room for armholes. Again, press the seams open. Then, fold and press the neckline and hem of the tunic, making sure to fold it twice to create a clean finish. Sew along the folded edges to secure them.
Add Finishing Touches
Now that your tunic is taking shape, you can add any desired embellishments. Consider adding buttons, lace, or embroidery to personalize your tunic and make it truly unique.
Try It On
Once you’ve finished sewing and adding your finishing touches, try on your tunic to check for fit. Make any necessary adjustments, such as taking in the sides or shortening the hem.
