Upon returning to civilian life, Driver attended the University of Indianapolis for a year before transferring to the Juilliard School in New York City. With his tall, lanky frame and intense presence, he quickly caught the eye of casting agents and began scoring small roles on TV shows like Law & Order and The Unusuals.
However, it wasn’t until he landed the part of Adam Sackler on the HBO series Girls that Driver truly burst onto the scene. His portrayal of the brooding, complicated boyfriend of show creator Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath earned him critical acclaim, a loyal following, and an Emmy nomination.
Since then, Driver has become one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, known for his ability to inhabit a wide range of characters with authenticity and depth. He’s played a villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its sequels, a conflicted detective in BlacKkKlansman, a disillusioned poet in Paterson, and a tortured musician in Marriage Story, among others.
One of the defining characteristics of Driver’s performances is his unwavering commitment to his roles. He’s known for immersing himself fully in his characters, sometimes to the point of physical discomfort – for example, he lost 50 pounds for his role in Silence, a Martin Scorsese film about Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan.
Driver’s dedication and raw talent have earned him numerous accolades, including nominations for Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Tonys. But despite his successes, he remains refreshingly down-to-earth, prioritizing his family, his nonprofit organization Arts in the Armed Forces, and his privacy over the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
In fact, he’s famously guarded about his personal life, rarely granting interviews or sharing details about his marriage to fellow actress Joanne Tucker (whom he met in a drama class and has been married to since 2013). He’s also been open about his struggles with anxiety, which he says have sometimes made acting feel like a daunting, impossible task.
Nevertheless, Driver perseveres, and his commitment to his craft continues to pay off. He’s currently in high demand, with several exciting projects in the works, including a lead role in the upcoming musical Annette and a rumored appearance in Ridley Scott’s next film, Gucci.
Whether he’s playing a villain or a hero, a soldier or a musician, Adam Driver brings a unique intensity and vulnerability to his roles that few other actors can match. He’s a true talent and a rising star, and there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing much more of him in the years to come.
