Zabka began his acting career in television commercials before making his film debut in the 1984 film The Karate Kid. In the film, he played the role of Johnny Lawrence, the antagonist to the main character Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio. Despite not being the main protagonist of the film, Zabka’s portrayal of Lawrence made him a popular character among audiences. He earned a nomination for the Young Artist Award for his performance in the film.
Following the success of The Karate Kid, Zabka appeared in several other films. In Just One of the Guys, he played the role of Greg Tolan, the popular athlete who falls for the film’s protagonist, Terry Griffith (Joyce Hyser), who disguises herself as a boy to prove a point about gender bias in journalism. Zabka also appeared in the Rodney Dangerfield comedy Back to School, where he played the role of Chas Osborne, the primary antagonist to Dangerfield’s character Thornton Melon.
In addition to acting, Zabka has also written and produced his own films. He wrote and produced the 2003 film Most, which won the Best Short Film Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He also wrote and produced the 2018 web television series Cobra Kai, a sequel to The Karate Kid that follows the adult lives of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Zabka reprised his role as Lawrence in the series, which premiered on YouTube Red before moving to Netflix for its second season.
Throughout his career, Zabka has been regarded as one of the ’80s most iconic villains. He has credited his ability to portray antagonistic characters to his early experiences as a competitive athlete. In a 2010 interview with People, Zabka said, “As an athlete, I was taught to suppress my emotions and compete fiercely, so that, in many ways, prepared me for Hollywood.”
Despite being known for his on-screen villainy, Zabka has garnered a reputation as a kind and genuine person off-screen. He has remained close friends with his Karate Kid co-star Ralph Macchio, and the two have worked together on several projects since the film’s release. In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Zabka said, “Ralph and I always joke that if we were to get into an actual fight, he would win because he actually studied martial arts. But we know that deep down, we’re just two actors who really like each other.”
In addition to his successes in acting and film production, Zabka has also lent his voice to several television series and films. He voiced the character of Moose in the animated television series Robot Chicken and provided the voice of Jack Kelly in the animated film Legend of the Three Caballeros.
William Zabka’s career has spanned three decades and includes some of the most iconic films and television series of the ’80s and beyond. Despite being known for his portrayals of villainous characters, Zabka has won over audiences with his kind and genuine personality off-screen. He continues to work in the film and television industry, and fans eagerly await his next project.
