Lauren Hill, born on April 18, 1995, was an American basketball player who made headlines not only for her skills on the court but also for her incredible determination and courage. Despite being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at just 18 years old, she chose to continue playing basketball and raised awareness about pediatric cancer during her remarkable journey.
Lauren’s love for basketball began at a young age. Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, she played for local school teams and quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent. Her dedication and hard work paid off when she received a basketball scholarship to attend Mount St. Joseph University.
Unfortunately, in late 2013, Lauren started experiencing health issues. After a series of medical tests, she received her diagnosis – Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an aggressive and ultimately fatal form of brain cancer. Despite the devastating news, Lauren refused to let her illness define her and decided to use her remaining time to make a difference.
In November 2014, just a few months after her diagnosis, Lauren’s story gained national attention when she fulfilled her dream of playing in a college basketball game. Mount St. Joseph’s opening season game against Hiram College became a symbol of hope and determination for Lauren and countless others fighting cancer.
Lauren’s story touched the hearts of many, and her incredible strength inspired people worldwide. She became an advocate for pediatric cancer research and worked closely with The Cure Starts Now Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for DIPG. Through her tireless efforts, Lauren raised over $1.5 million for cancer research.
Despite her deteriorating health, Lauren remained positive and continued to inspire others through her actions. She played in four college basketball games, refusing to let her illness limit her abilities. Her unwavering determination and courage inspired a movement that coined the phrase “layups for Lauren,” encouraging people to donate to cancer research for every layup made during basketball games.
Lauren’s journey not only impacted the world of basketball but also brought attention to the urgent need for more funding and research for pediatric cancers. Her impact was recognized by various organizations, and she was honored with numerous awards for her courage, including the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards.
Sadly, on April 10, 2015, Lauren Hill passed away at the age of 19. Her legacy, however, continues to inspire people to this day. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment, pursuing our dreams relentlessly, and using our struggles to make a positive difference in the world.
