Trick or Treat – A Cult Classic Film Worth Watching Again

Released in 1986, Trick or Treat is a horror comedy that failed to make a mark at the box office during its initial run but has since gained a cult following over the years. Written by Rhet Topham and Michael S. Murphey and directed by Charles Martin Smith, the film tells the story of a high school student who unleashes the demonic spirit of a rock star through his music.

The plot revolves around Eddie Weinbauer (played by Marc Price), a teenage metalhead who’s bullied by his classmates and dreams of making it big in the music industry. When his favorite rock star Sammi Curr (played by Tony Fields) dies in a hotel fire, Eddie is devastated. He discovers that Curr had sent him a demo tape shortly before his death, which he listens to religiously.

Eddie soon realizes that the tape contains messages from Sammi from beyond the grave, and he uses the music to exact revenge on his tormentors. However, the music proves to be more than just a tool for revenge when it resurrects Sammi’s ghost, who proceeds to wreak havoc on the town.

One of the standout features of Trick or Treat is its excellent soundtrack, which features original music from Fastway, a band led by former Motorhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke. The soundtrack perfectly captures the essence of 80s metal and enhances the film’s horror elements.

Another strength of the film is its performances, with Marc Price delivering a solid performance as Eddie, capturing both his vulnerability and his rebellious spirit. Tony Fields also shines as Sammi Curr, bringing charisma and menace to the role of the demonic rock star.

At its core, Trick or Treat is a fun and campy horror flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s peppered with humorous moments, such as when Eddie’s friend Roger (played by Glen Morgan) dresses up as a Priest to exorcise the demon, only to end up rocking out to Sammi’s music.

However, the film also has a dark side, with scenes of blood and gore that don’t shy away from violence. It’s an effective blend of horror and comedy that’s reminiscent of other classic horror films such as Evil Dead and Return of the Living Dead.

Overall, Trick or Treat may not be a perfect film, but it’s an enjoyable one that’s worth revisiting for fans of horror and heavy metal. Its mix of comedy, horror, and great music is sure to entertain, and its cult status is well-deserved.
