The Joyful Mystery has five parts. The Annunciation- which tells the story of when an angel appeared to Mary and told her she was pregnant with Jesus. The Visitation- this part talks about when Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and the baby in her womb leapt for joy in recognizing the presence of Jesus. The Nativity- tells us the story of the birth of Jesus. The Presentation- reflects on the time when Jesus was presented in the temple and Simeon held him in his arms. Finally, the Finding in the Temple- this part talks about the time when Jesus was found by his parents in the temple, after they had thought he was lost.
The second mystery is the Luminous Mystery. Also known as the Mysteries of Light. This mystery was introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2002. It is inspired by the Gospels, specifically the public life of Jesus. This mystery has five parts- The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, the Wedding Feast at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist. This mystery is mostly focused on the teachings of Jesus, and his miracles, it reminds us of our call to discipleship.
The third mystery is the Sorrowful Mystery. These parts focus on the suffering of Jesus in his final days on earth. These are usually prayed during the Lent season. The parts are; The Agony in the Garden- where Jesus prayed while waiting for his arrest, The Scourging at the Pillar- describes the cruel whipping of Jesus by Roman soldiers. The Crowning with Thorns- which takes us through the moment Jesus wore a crown of thorns. The Carrying of the Cross- tells us about the journey of Jesus, carrying the cross on his way to be crucified. Finally, the Crucifixion- which is the solemn part of the mystery that recounts the brutal killing of Jesus.
The fourth and last mystery is the Glorious Mystery. This part of the rosary is usually reserved for Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays of Easter, and throughout the month of May. These parts focus on the resurrection, and the glory of Jesus. The parts include; The Resurrection of Jesus, The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, The Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven, and finally, The Crowning of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
