According to Christian tradition, Saint Joseph was born in Bethlehem around 100 BC. He was the son of Jacob, a carpenter, and his wife Rachel. Joseph grew up in a devout Jewish household, and he inherited his father’s trade as a carpenter.
When Joseph was a young man, he met and fell in love with Mary, who was just a young girl at the time. The two were betrothed, or engaged, to be married, and Joseph promised to take care of Mary and protect her always.
However, Joseph’s relationship with Mary became complicated when she became pregnant with the child that would become Jesus. According to the Bible, Joseph was initially unsure of how to proceed, as he knew that he was not the father of the child. But after an angel appeared to him in a dream, Joseph accepted his role as the earthly father of Jesus and vowed to raise him as his own.
