At the beginning of the book, the tree and the boy were friends, and the tree would offer the boy apples from its branches, its leaves as shade and branches to swing on. The boy would spend his time playing around the tree, being in its company, and they both enjoyed each other‘s presence. As the boy grew up, he would come back to the tree whenever he wanted a gift or a place to play, and the tree happily obliged.
In time, the boy grew up to become a man, and he started to ask the tree for much more than just fruit and shade. He asked the tree for wood to build a house for his family, wood to build a boat, and finally, he returned to ask the tree for its trunk to build a house for himself. The tree never refused the man, him everything the tree had to offer. Despite each request leaving the tree with less to offer, the tree never said no and continued to provide for the man.
Through the story of The Giving Tree, we learn the importance of selflessness and sacrifice. The tree puts the needs of the boy (later man) above its own needs,
