The Cinque Terre, meaning “Five Lands,” is a breathtaking region on the northwest coast of Italy. Its unique charm lies in its five picturesque villages, clinging to the rugged cliffs and overlooking the turquoise waters of the Ligurian Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers visitors a journey through ancient history, incredible landscapes, and a taste of authentic Italian culture.
Starting our journey in Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of the Cinque Terre, we are greeted by colorful houses stacked on top of each other, connected by narrow winding streets. As we explore the village, we discover its charming little harbor, where fishing boats bob gently in the water. Striking rock formations, known as “sea stacks,” add to the dramatic beauty of the landscape. Riomaggiore is also known for its delicious seafood delicacies, such as anchovies and calamari, which shouldn’t be missed.
Continuing on, we reach Manarola, considered by many as the most romantic of the five villages. The vibrant colors of the buildings seem to spill down the hillside towards the sea, creating a mesmerizing view. One of the highlights of Manarola is the Via dell’Amore, or the “Lovers’ Lane,” a scenic coastal path that connects it to the neighboring village of Corniglia. It’s the perfect spot to take a romantic stroll, hand in hand with your loved one, while enjoying unforgettable vistas.
Corniglia, perched high on a cliff, offers a more tranquil escape from the crowds. To reach the village, we climb a flight of 382 steps or take a shuttle bus. Corniglia is known for its terraced vineyards and delicious local wine. We can’t resist visiting a small family-owned winery, where we learn about traditional winemaking methods and indulge in a tasting of the region’s famous Vernaccia di Corniglia.
Next on our itinerary is Vernazza, often considered the most photogenic of the five villages. With its small harbor filled with colorful fishing boats, a medieval castle overlooking the sea, and a lively square, Vernazza is a true delight for the senses. The village is also a great starting point for hiking enthusiasts, as it offers access to the famous Sentiero Azzurro, a coastal path that connects all five villages. The hike offers spectacular views of the cliffs, vineyards, and the crystal-clear waters below.
Our journey concludes in Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most tourist-oriented of the Cinque Terre villages. Monterosso is famous for its beautiful beaches, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. With an array of beachside restaurants, serving delicious Ligurian cuisine, and charming streets lined with lively cafes and shops, Monterosso offers the perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment. Don’t forget to try the local specialty, Monterosso lemonade, a refreshing citrus-infused drink that will quench your thirst on a hot summer day.
