The survey included responses from 500 people, ranging in age from 18 to 65. One of the first questions we asked was whether or not people planned to travel this summer. Surprisingly, 60% of respondents said that they did plan on traveling. Of those that were traveling, the majority said that they planned on taking a road trip (55%), while 30% said they would be flying to their destination.
We also asked respondents to rank their top travel concerns in light of the pandemic. Not surprisingly, the top concern was exposure to the virus (70%). Following that, 50% of respondents were worried about cancelled flights or hotels, while 40% were concerned about restrictions on travel.
When it comes to destinations, we found that beach vacations were still the top choice for summer travel. 40% of respondents said that they would be heading to the beach, while 30% opted for a national park or camping trip. Only 10% said they would be traveling internationally.
In light of the pandemic, safety precautions are essential. We asked respondents what types of precautions they planned on taking during their travels. The majority said that they planned on wearing masks (80%) and washing their hands frequently (75%). Additionally, over half of the respondents said that they would be avoiding crowded areas and practicing social distancing.
Finally, we wanted to know how people’s travel plans had changed in light of the pandemic. Of those that were traveling, 70% said that their plans had changed in some way. The most common change was a shift in destination. For example, respondents who had originally planned on traveling to highly affected areas were now choosing to go to less affected regions. Additionally, some had opted for more romantic, secluded getaways as opposed to larger, more crowded destinations.
Overall, the survey highlights the impact the pandemic has had on people’s travel plans. Yet, despite concerns and restrictions, a significant number of people are still planning on traveling. While travel might look a little different this year, with precautions in place and a more intentional approach to selecting destinations, it can still be a great way to unwind and enjoy the summer months.
