Stetson Bennett

Stetson Bennett may not have had the most conventional path to becoming the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, but he sure has made the most of his opportunity. After starting his college career at Georgia as a walk-on, he transferred to a junior college before eventually making his way back to Athens as a scholarship player. Now, he’s leading the 4th ranked Bulldogs to a potential national championship.

Bennett’s journey to this point has been filled with twists and turns, but his passion for the game has never wavered. Growing up in Blackshear, Georgia, he was a standout quarterback at Pierce County High School, leading the Bears to a state championship in his senior year. Despite his success on the field, he didn’t receive the offers he was hoping for from major Division I schools.

Undeterred, Bennett walked on to the Georgia Bulldogs in 2017, hoping to make a name for himself at the highest level of college football. His first two seasons with the team were spent as a backup quarterback, but his determination to prove himself never waned. Following the 2018 season, Bennett decided to transfer to Jones County Junior College in Mississippi, where he became the starter and threw for over 2,700 yards and 16 touchdowns.

After his successful stint at Jones County, Bennett’s original team came calling, offering him a scholarship to come back and compete for the starting quarterback job. Despite strong competition from transfer quarterback Jamie Newman and highly-touted freshman D’Wan Mathis, it was Bennett who ultimately won the job.

Bennett’s first game as the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs was a rocky one, as he struggled in their season-opening loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks. But he bounced back in a big way in their next game against Auburn, throwing for 240 yards and running in two touchdowns to lead Georgia to victory. Since then, he’s been a steady presence under center for the Bulldogs, leading them to a perfect 4-0 record thus far.

Instead, he’s been relying on a group of young receivers, including freshman Jermaine Burton and sophomore Kearis Jackson, to make plays for him.

Bennett’s teammates rave about his leadership and work ethic, with defensive lineman Jordan Davis saying, “He’s got that ‘it’ factor… He brings a lot of energy to the field. He’s a competitor. He’s always going to fight.”

As Georgia heads into the second half of their season, Bennett will be tasked with leading them to victories over tough opponents like Alabama and Florida. It won’t be easy, but if his first four games are any indication, he’s up for the challenge.

Regardless of what happens on the field in the weeks to come, one thing is clear: Stetson Bennett’s journey to becoming the starting quarterback at Georgia is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and unwavering love for the game. He may not have taken the most traditional path to get here, but he’s proving that he belongs among the best in college football.
