What You’ll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools on-hand:
- A screwdriver
- A tension wrench
- A pick set
Step 1: Insert the Tension Wrench
Start by inserting the tension wrench into the bottom part of the keyhole. Make sure it fits snugly. The tension wrench will apply rotational pressure to the cylinder.
Step 2: Apply Torque
Apply a gentle but firm torque in the direction the cylinder rotates with the tension wrench. This creates tension and keeps the pins inside the lock in place.
Step 3: Insert the Pick
Insert the pick into the top part of the keyhole. Feel the pins through the pick’s tip. The pick will help you manipulate the pins inside the lock.
Step 4: Locate Binding Pins
Slowly move the pick up and down while maintaining pressure with the tension wrench. Pay attention to pins that resist movement, as these are the binding pins. The binding pins are set deeper inside the lock and are more difficult to move.
Step 5: Set the Pins
One by one, apply upward pressure on the binding pins with the pick until you hear a click. This signifies that the pin has set. Repeat this process for all binding pins.
Step 6: Rotate the Cylinder
Once all pins are set, apply a slightly stronger torque with the tension wrench. Slowly rotate the cylinder in the direction required to unlock it. The cylinder should turn smoothly and unlock the door.
Step 7: Test and Lubricate
After successfully unlocking the door, test the cylinder to ensure it operates smoothly. If it feels stiff or sticky, lubricate the lock using a recommended lubricant. This will keep your European cylinder lock functioning properly.
Opening a European cylinder lock may take patience and practice, but with the right tools and technique, you can quickly become proficient. Remember to always follow legal and ethical guidelines when opening locks, and only use this knowledge for legitimate purposes. Now you can confidently open European cylinder locks with ease.
