Why is Descaling Important?
Descaling refers to the process of removing mineral buildup from the internal components of your coffee machine. Over time, minerals such as calcium and limescale accumulate and affect your Nespresso machine’s efficiency and lifespan. Descaling helps prevent clogs, improves water flow, and maintains the taste of your coffee.
What You Will Need
- A Nespresso descaling kit (available from Nespresso or authorized retailers)
- Enough water to fill the water tank
- An empty container that can hold the capacity of your machine’s water tank
Step 1: Prepare the Nespresso Machine
Start by emptying the capsule container and drip tray. Ensure that there are no capsules left in the machine.
Step 2: Mix the Descaling Solution
Follow the instructions provided with your Nespresso descaling kit to prepare the solution. Usually, you will need to mix the solution with water in the appropriate ratio.
Step 3: Enter the Descaling Mode
Switch on your Nespresso machine and ensure it is in standby mode. Press and hold the buttons for both the small and large cups simultaneously for three seconds until they start blinking. This indicates that the machine has entered the descaling mode.
Step 4: Begin the Descaling Process
Place a container under the coffee outlet to collect the solution. Press the large cup button and let half of the descaling solution flow through the machine. Pause for about 15 seconds and then press the large cup button again to complete the process. The solution will now flow through the machine’s hot water nozzle. Discard the collected solution.
Step 5: Rinse and Clean
Fill the water tank with clean water and place an empty container under the coffee outlet. Press the large cup button to rinse the machine. Repeat this process at least three times to ensure thorough rinsing.
Step 6: Exit the Descaling Mode
Press and hold the buttons for both the small and large cups again for three seconds to exit the descaling mode.
Step 7: Final Clean-up
Empty and clean the container used to collect the rinse water. Rinse the water tank, capsule container, and drip tray thoroughly. Your Nespresso machine is now ready for use!

By following these step-by-step instructions, you can easily descale your machine and keep it in top-notch condition.
