What is Tobradex Ointment?
Tobradex ointment is a combination medication that contains Tobramycin and Dexamethasone. Tobramycin is an antibiotic that helps fight off bacterial infections, while Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and relieves associated symptoms.
Before You Start
Before beginning the application process, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent any potential contamination. It’s also advisable to remove contact lenses if you wear them before applying the ointment.
Step 1: Tilt Your Head Back
To apply Tobradex ointment properly, tilt your head back and look up at the ceiling. This position allows for easier access to the affected eye.
Step 2: Gently Pull Down Your Lower Eyelid
Using your index finger, gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. This step helps create space for the ointment to be applied.
Step 3: Squeeze a Small Amount of Ointment
Squeeze a small amount of Tobradex ointment onto the inside edge of the lower eyelid. Be cautious not to touch the tip of the tube to your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination.
Step 4: Close Your Eye and Roll Your Eyeball
Close your eye gently, then roll your eyeball around in all directions. This facilitates the spread of the ointment across the eye’s surface, ensuring it reaches all affected areas.
Step 5: Wipe Off Excess Ointment
After a minute or so, if there is any excess ointment remaining around your eye, carefully wipe it away with a clean tissue or cotton swab. Excess ointment can cause blurred vision and discomfort if left on the skin.
Step 6: Repeat for the Other Eye (if applicable)
If both eyes require treatment, repeat steps 1 to 5 for the other eye, ensuring proper hygiene and careful application for each eye.
Step 7: Wash Your Hands Again
Once you have finished applying the Tobradex ointment, wash your hands again with soap and water to remove any medication residue and prevent potential cross-contamination.
When to Use Tobradex Ointment
Tobradex ointment is typically prescribed for eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and uveitis, among others. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions on when and how frequently to apply the ointment, along with the duration of treatment.
By following these step-by-step instructions, you can apply Tobradex ointment effectively and ensure optimal treatment for your eye condition. Remember to always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for usage and contact them if you experience any adverse effects or concerns during your treatment.
