The first Shazam! movie from 2019 was a success, grossing over $363 million worldwide. So, it’s no surprise that a sequel was greenlit. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been in the works for a while, and although not much is known about the film, we’ve gathered everything we know so far about the upcoming superhero adventure.
The Plot
According to director David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will deal with the consequences of Billy Batson/Shazam (played by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi, respectively) sharing his powers with his foster siblings, Freddy, Pedro, Mary, Darla, and Eugene.
“In the first movie, they became family, and that’s what the movie was about. And so, to me, it’s about exploring that even further,” Sandberg said in an interview with Collider. “It’s like a sequel to the first movie but it’s also in a way its own thing.”
The new villain
Helen Mirren has joined the cast as the movie’s main antagonist, named Hespera. Not much is known about her character, but reports suggest that she’s a daughter of Atlas or the God of War himself, Ares.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Levi said that Hespera is “a force to be reckoned with” and that audiences can expect the sequel to be “much bigger and much crazier” than the first movie.
The returning cast
Apart from Angel and Levi reprising their roles as Billy and Shazam, respectively, most of the supporting cast is set to return for the sequel. That includes Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, and Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley. Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, and DJ Cotrona are also expected to return as the adult versions of the foster siblings.
The new suit
In a leaked image from the set of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Levi was seen wearing a different costume from the one he wore in the first movie. The new suit seems to be an upgrade, featuring a more textured design with the iconic lightning bolt emblem on the chest.
Although Sandberg himself hasn’t confirmed whether the new suit will be in the movie, he did share a teaser image on Instagram of the Shazam family’s new costumes, which seemingly includes Levi’s new suit.
The Release Date
Shazam! Fury of the Gods was originally scheduled to be released on April 1st, 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Warner Bros. decided to push the release date back to June 2nd, 2023.
While the delay is disappointing for fans, it gives the filmmakers more time to work on the movie and deliver a bigger and better adventure for Billy and the Shazam family.
Conclusion
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is still a mystery, but fans can expect more family fun and superhero action from the sequel. With a new villain, an upgraded suit, and most of the cast returning, the movie promises to be bigger and crazier than the first one. We’ll have to wait until June 2023 to see the finished product, but until then, let’s hope for more teasers and sneak peeks from the filmmakers.
