The basic plot of Rummy revolves around two friends, Joseph (Inigo Prabhakaran) and Karthik (Vijay Sethupathi), who are studying in a law college in Chennai. Joseph is the younger brother of a local don and is often involved in criminal activities. Karthik, on the other hand, is a bright student who has a bright future ahead of him. Despite their differences, the two friends share a deep bond.
Things take a turn when Joseph falls in love with a girl named Meenakshi (Gayathrie Shankar). Meenakshi is the daughter of a rich businessman, and her family is not too happy about Joseph’s background. As a result, they forbid her from seeing him.
Joseph and Meenakshi decide to elope, and Karthik helps them. However, the elopement brings about unforeseen consequences, with Joseph being chased down by a gang of criminals. The trio is then forced to move from one place to another to evade the criminals.
As the movie progresses, we witness the evolution of the characters. Joseph, who was initially portrayed as a ruthless and reckless criminal, undergoes a transformation. He becomes more responsible and starts to value relationships more. Karthik, too, learns valuable life lessons as he deals with the various problems that come their way. Meenakshi, however, remains to be a passive character, and her role in the movie is limited to being the love interest of Joseph.
One of the significant themes that the movie delves into is the concept of friendship. The relationship between Joseph and Karthik is shown to be a strong bond that remains intact despite the challenges they face. Their unwavering loyalty and support for each other are admirable and showcase the true meaning of friendship.
Another theme that Rummy explores is the complexity of human emotions. The movie depicts the various emotions that the characters go through- love, fear, anger, betrayal, and redemption. This wide range of emotions makes the characters more relatable and human.
The music in Rummy is composed by D. Imman and has received positive reviews. The songs blend seamlessly into the plot and add a new dimension to the film. Some of the stand-out tracks include “Koodamela Koodavechi” and “Adiyae Yenna Raagam.”
In terms of performances, Inigo Prabhakaran shines as Joseph, aptly balancing the vulnerability and toughness of the character. Vijay Sethupathi, as always, delivers a stellar performance portraying the character of Karthik with ease. Gayathrie Shankar, however, is somewhat underwhelming, and her limited screen time does not allow her to showcase her acting prowess.
Overall, Rummy is an engaging movie that explores multiple themes and emotions. Although the plot may seem predictable at times, the stellar performances by the lead actors and the captivating music make the film a must-watch.
