Early Life and Career
Born in Red Bluff, California, Shaw spent most of his childhood in Oregon, where he started his formal music education. After completing his undergraduate degree in Pomona College, he continued his studies in music and at the Aspen School of Music in Colorado. Following his military service during World War II, Shaw earned a graduate degree in conducting at the Julliard School in New York City in 1946.
