Road to Livigno without crossing Switzerland

However, there is an alternative route that avoids crossing Switzerland altogether, offering stunning scenery and a unique travel experience.

Starting from Milan, the bustling and vibrant capital of Lombardy, travelers take the A4 highway towards Brescia and then continue on the A22 towards Trento. This initial part of the journey takes you through the Italian countryside, offering glimpses of vineyards and charming villages along the way.

As you approach Trento, the landscape starts to change, and the mountains begin to dominate the horizon. From Trento, head north on the SS12 for about 30 kilometers until you reach San Michele all’Adige. This is where the road splits, and you have the option to continue north on the SS43 towards Merano, or take the SS38 towards Bolzano.

If you choose the route towards Bolzano, you’ll see the stunning Adige River Valley unfold before your eyes. The road winds its way through the heart of the Dolomites, offering breathtaking views of majestic peaks, dense forests, and charming alpine villages. Continuing on the SS38, you’ll eventually reach the town of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol. As you descend from Passo di Costalunga, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Val di Fassa, a picturesque valley renowned for its natural beauty and ski resorts. Continue along the SS48 and SS242 until you reach Campitello di Fassa, a cozy alpine village nestled in the valley.

From Campitello di Fassa, the road will lead you through the Val di Fiemme, another charming valley dotted with picturesque towns and surrounded by majestic peaks. As you continue on the SS62, you’ll soon arrive in the town of Cavalese, where you can take a short detour to visit the dramatic Egna Geo Park, known for its impressive geological formations.

Leaving Cavalese, the road winds its way through scenic countryside until you reach Passo di Tonale, a mountain pass that marks the border between Trentino and Lombardy. This is the turning point of your journey, as you leave the Dolomites and head towards Livigno.

From Passo di Tonale, continue on the SS42 until you reach the town of Edolo. Here, take the SS39 towards Aprica, a charming mountain village famous for its ski slopes and alpine beauty. As you pass through the Valtellina region, famous for its vineyards and delicious wines, you’ll witness the landscape gradually change as you approach the Engadin Valley.

Following the SS38, you’ll reach Bormio, a renowned thermal spa town nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps. This is a great place to take a break and relax in one of the many thermal baths before continuing your journey.

Finally, from Bormio, take the SS301 towards Livigno. This narrow and winding road will lead you through breathtaking mountain scenery, with snow-capped peaks and green valleys as far as the eye can see. After approximately 50 kilometers, you’ll arrive in Livigno, a hidden gem offering world-class skiing, hiking, and a bustling town center.

By taking this alternative route, you not only avoid crossing Switzerland but also have the opportunity to explore the stunning Dolomites and experience the unique blend of Italian and Austrian cultures along the way.
