What do you need?
Before we begin, make sure you have the following:
- A computer or laptop
- A digital audio workstation (DAW)
- The song from which you want to remove the vocals
- Patience and attention to detail
Step 1: Import the song
Open your digital audio workstation and import the song you want to work on. Most DAWs allow you to simply drag and drop the audio file into the workspace.
Step 2: Duplicate the track
Create a duplicate track of the imported song. This will serve as our reference track and will allow us to A/B compare the original and processed versions later.
Step 3: Apply an EQ plugin
Now comes the tricky part. We will be using an EQ plugin to isolate the vocals. Start by applying a high-pass filter to the duplicate track. Set the cutoff frequency to around 200Hz. This will attenuate the low-frequency content where most of the vocals reside.
Step 4: Invert the phase
Invert the phase of the duplicate track. This can usually be done within the EQ plugin itself. Inverting the phase will cancel out any shared content between the original and duplicate tracks, effectively removing the vocals.
Step 5: Fine-tune the EQ settings
Experiment with the EQ settings to achieve optimal results. Adjust the cutoff frequency and slope of the high-pass filter, and make minor tweaks to the other frequencies if needed. Take your time and listen attentively to ensure the vocals are being adequately removed, without affecting the overall quality of the instrumental part.
Step 6: Compare the original and processed tracks
Unmute the duplicate track and compare it to the original track by switching back and forth between them. Make sure the instrumental part sounds natural and free from any noticeable artifacts. Tweak the EQ settings further if necessary.
Step 7: Export the processed track
Once you’re satisfied with the results, export the processed track as a new audio file. You now have an instrumental version of the song without vocals.
Removing vocals from a song can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and techniques, it’s definitely achievable. By following this step-by-step guide, you can create your own instrumental versions of your favorite tracks or use them for your own musical projects. So go ahead, give it a try, and unlock a whole new world of possibilities!
