What materials will I need?
Before we get started, gather the following materials:
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Seam ripper (optional)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Pins
Step 1: Measure and mark
Put on the jeans and figure out how much length you want to remove. Use the measuring tape to measure from the bottom of the jeans to your desired length. Mark this length with a pin or a fabric chalk.
Step 2: Prepare the jeans
If your jeans have a hem, use a seam ripper to remove it. Otherwise, skip this step. Turn the jeans inside out and lay them flat on a table or work surface.
Step 3: Cut and secure
Following the marked line, carefully cut off the excess length from both legs. Make sure to cut in a straight line and leave a little extra material for hemming. Once cut, fold the fabric over itself to create a hem. Pin it in place, ensuring the fabric is even on both legs.
Step 4: Sew the hem
Using your sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew the hem in place. Start at one of the side seams and stitch all around the leg opening. Make sure to securely fasten the thread at the beginning and end.
If you’re using a sewing machine, set it to a straight stitch with a medium length. Sew slowly and carefully to ensure a neat and even hem.
Step 5: Trim any excess
After sewing the hem, trim any excess fabric and loose threads. This will give your jeans a clean and finished look.
Step 6: Try on your shortened bell bottom jeans!
Once you’re done with the alterations, turn the jeans right side out and try them on. Check if the length is perfect and make any final adjustments if necessary.
Now you have successfully shortened your bell bottom jeans! Enjoy rocking their trendy and fashionable look.
