What You’ll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools and equipment on hand:
- Phillips head screwdriver (sizes #1 and #2)
- Torx T8 security screwdriver
- Spudger or plastic opening tool
- Cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol
- Soft cleaning brush
Step 1: Preparation
Ensure your PS4 is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet. This will prevent any potential accidents or damage. Place a clean cloth or non-slip mat on a flat surface to protect the console from scratches.
Step 2: Removing the Hard Drive Cover
Locate the hard drive cover, which is on the left side of the PS4. Gently slide it to the left until it comes loose. Lift the cover upwards to remove it completely.
Step 3: Removing the Hard Drive
Using your fingers or a spudger, carefully pull the hard drive towards you. Once it has been disconnected from the console, remove it completely.
Step 4: Removing the Screws
Flip the PS4 upside down and locate the warranty sticker near the HDMI port. Carefully peel it off, as it will reveal a screw. Remove this screw using the Phillips head screwdriver. Proceed to remove the remaining screws on the back of the console.
Step 5: Opening the PS4
Turn the PS4 back to its normal position and gently lift or slide the top cover towards the front of the console. Be cautious as there are still cables connecting the top cover to the motherboard.
Step 6: Disconnecting the Cables
Using a spudger or your fingers, carefully unplug the power supply cable, controller charging port cable, and any other cables connected to the motherboard.
Step 7: Removing the Motherboard
Locate and remove the screws holding the motherboard in place. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew them. Once the screws are removed, gently lift the motherboard out of the console and set it aside on a safe surface.
Step 8: Cleaning and Reassembling
Take your soft cleaning brush and gently brush away any dust or debris from the internal components of the PS4. Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the fan blades and any other areas that require more thorough cleaning. Once everything is clean, reassemble the PS4 by following the previous steps in reverse order.
Disassembling your PS4 can be a complex task, so it’s important to proceed with caution and follow the steps carefully. If you are unsure of any step or encounter any difficulties, it is recommended to seek professional assistance. We hope this guide has been helpful, and happy gaming!
