Privilege: A Very Real Entity

Privilege is the term used to describe a certain set of advantages that are given to individuals or groups of people, based on various factors such as race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, religion and physical ability. It’s the benefits that come with belonging to a certain group, whether they are conscious or unconscious. Privilege is often invisible to those who benefit from it and a cause for frustration and anger for those who do not.

In recent years, there has been much discussion about privilege, specifically white privilege and male privilege. The concept of privilege can be difficult to understand for those who have never experienced what it is like to be marginalized, discriminated against or treated differently because of their identity. For those who have been denied opportunities, it’s easy to identify the ways in which privilege shapes their lives and the society around them.

But privilege is not just about owning a large house, driving a fancy car or having a high-paying job. It’s about the small things that are often overlooked, such as walking into a store and not being followed, never having to worry about how your hair looks, having your voice heard in a meeting, being able to take a day off from work without fear of losing your job or even just being able to exist without fear of violence.

Privilege plays a significant role in shaping our identities and our relationship with others. It can be the cause of deeply-ingrained prejudices and biases that prevent us from seeing the world from the perspective of those who may not have the same privileges as us. Privilege is the reason why some people, no matter how hard they try, are always one step behind.

As a society, we have a responsibility to recognize privilege and do everything in our power to address it. This includes educating ourselves and others, acknowledging our own privilege and using it to fight for justice and equality. It means listening to the voices of those who are often ignored or silenced and working to build a world where everyone has the same opportunities and privileges.

Privilege is not something that can be easily overcome, but by acknowledging its existence and working to combat it, we can create a world that is fairer, more just and more equal for everyone. It’s time for all of us to take a closer look at the privileges we have, no matter how small, and use them to make a positive difference in the world. We need to be vigilant about privilege, confront it whenever we encounter it, and work together to create change. Only then can we truly empower everyone in our society to reach their full potential.
