Saint Veronica Giuliani is an Italian saint and mystic who devoted her life to the service of God. She was born on July 27, 1660, in Mercatello sul Metauro, Italy. She was named Orsola Giuliani at birth, but later took the name of Veronica in honor of the saint who offered her veil to wipe Jesus’ face during his journey to Calvary.

Veronica joined the Capuchin Poor Clares at the age of seventeen and received her habit in 1677. She was known for her devotion to the Eucharist, prayer, and penance. She received the stigmata in 1694, and it remained with her until her death.

Saint Veronica Giuliani’s spirituality was deeply rooted in the Paschal Mystery, or the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. She believed that the sufferings of Christ were a source of grace and that she could participate in them through her own sufferings, which she offered for the salvation of souls.

Saint Veronica Giuliani’s prayer life was characterized by her contemplation of the wounds of Christ. She often prayed with the image of Christ’s wounds before her, and she reflected on their meaning and significance. Her prayer was not just about asking for favors; it was a dialogue with God, an expression of love, and a way of deepening her relationship with Him.

Below is a prayer inspired by the life and spirituality of Saint Veronica Giuliani. It is a prayer of thanksgiving, surrender, and trust in God’s providence:

Dear Saint Veronica Giuliani,

You who loved Jesus with all your heart,

And offered your sufferings for the salvation of souls,

Pray for us to have a deeper love for our Lord.

Help us to embrace our crosses with joy,

And to offer them as a sacrifice of love.

Teach us to contemplate the wounds of Christ,

And to find in them the source of grace.

May our prayer be a dialogue with God,

A way of deepening our relationship with Him.

May we learn from your example of humility,

And trust in God’s providence in all things.

We thank you for your intercession,

And ask that you guide us on our journey to God.

Amen.

Saint Veronica Giuliani was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI on May 26, 1839. She is the patron saint of the Capuchin Poor Clares and of the city of Mercatello sul Metauro, where she was born. Her life and example remind us that our prayer should not be self-centered, but rather a conversation with God, an expression of love, and a way of deepening our relationship with Him. May we learn from her example of undying love for Jesus and strive to live our lives in the service of God.
