Pray for us, Holy Mother of God

“Pray for us, Holy Mother of God”- this phrase is a common one among the faithful Catholics as they seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church holds Mary in high esteem as the Mother of Christ and the Queen of heaven, and her powerful intercessory role in the lives of believers cannot be overemphasized.

For instance, at the Wedding at Cana in John 2:1-11, Mary interceded on behalf of the couple who ran out of wine, and Jesus, at her request, performed the first public miracle of His ministry, turning water into wine. In another instance in Acts 1:14, Mary was present with the disciples as they prayed for the Holy Spirit to come upon them, and subsequently, the Holy Spirit came upon them on Pentecost.

Mary’s intercession is not limited to scriptural instances alone. Throughout history, many Catholics have attested to the powerful intercessory role of Mary in their lives. From miraculous healings to protection from danger and other impossible situations, Mary’s intercession has brought hope, comfort, and joy to the faithful.

When we pray, “Pray for us, Holy Mother of God,” we acknowledge and honor Mary’s unique role in the salvation plan of God and seek her powerful intercession. We ask her to pray for us before the throne of her Son, Jesus Christ, and to obtain for us the graces we need to live as faithful followers of Christ.
