Warmbier was born on December 12, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended the University of Virginia. In December 2015, he decided to visit North Korea as a part of a study abroad program, despite warnings from the US government about the danger of visiting the country.
On January 2, 2016, just a few days after arriving in North Korea, Warmbier was arrested at the airport while attempting to leave the country. The reason for his arrest was that he was accused of stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel in Pyongyang in an act of anti-state hostility.
After a closed-door trial, Warmbier was convicted of “hostile acts against the state” and was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. It was said that he was forced to make a confession under duress, which was broadcast on North Korean state television. His family and friends protested his innocence and called for his release.
Seventeen months later, Warmbier was released from North Korea and flown back to the United States in a comatose state. It was discovered that he had suffered significant brain damage, likely caused by lack of oxygen. In spite of all the medical care given to him, Warmbier passed away just days after arriving back to his homeland at the age of 22.
The death of Otto Warmbier brought much controversy and attention to the relations between North Korea and the United States. Many have called for stricter travel restrictions and policies to prevent more American citizens from being subjected to the unjust treatment and punishment of North Korean officials.
President Trump has expressed his condolences to the Warmbier family and said that the North Korean government “brutally” treated their son. He also stated that he holds the North Korean regime responsible for the death of Otto Warmbier.
The Warmbier family created the “Otto Warmbier Foundation” to honor their son’s legacy and to promote international human rights. They also called for the release of other American citizens imprisoned in North Korea.
As the world mourns the loss of Otto Warmbier, it is important to remember the tragedy that occurred and to continue to push for the protection of American citizens overseas. The story of Otto Warmbier has reminded us of the importance of freedom and justice in all corners of the world.
