Saint Rita’s own life was full of challenges and hardships, especially when it came to forgiveness. She was born in Italy in the 14th century, and from a young age, her family was divided by political strife. When she was 12 years old, her parents forced her into an arranged marriage to appease a rival faction. Her husband was abusive and unfaithful, and after two decades of marriage, he was murdered. Saint Rita’s sons were determined to seek revenge, but she urged them to follow the path of forgiveness and let go of their anger.
Saint Rita’s belief in the power of forgiveness eventually led to a reconciliation between the warring factions in her town. She became a nun after her husband’s death, and many miracles were attributed to her intercession during her life and after her death.
For those participating in the Novena to Saint Rita, the fourth day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of forgiveness in our own lives. Whether we are struggling to forgive someone else, or seeking forgiveness ourselves, Saint Rita can guide us toward a path of healing.
One prayer that is often said during the Novena to Saint Rita is the Prayer for Forgiveness. This prayer acknowledges the difficulties that come with forgiving someone who has hurt us, but also highlights the transformative power of releasing anger and resentment. Here is a version of this prayer:
Dear Saint Rita,
Today I ask for the strength to forgive those who have wronged me. It is not easy to let go of anger and hurt, but I believe in the power of forgiveness to heal relationships and bring peace to my heart.
I pray especially for those who have hurt me deeply, and for those who have caused harm to others. I ask for the grace to see them as human beings, flawed and struggling like myself. Help me to find compassion for them, even as I hold them accountable for their actions.
As I seek forgiveness for my own errors and missteps, I offer this prayer as a sign of my commitment to grow in grace and love. Please be with me on this journey, and guide me toward the peace that comes with forgiveness.
Thank you, Saint Rita, for your intercession and your example of forgiveness in the face of hardship. Amen.
By meditating on the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation during the fourth day of the Novena to Saint Rita, participants can find strength and clarity in difficult situations. Whatever challenges we face in our lives, Saint Rita’s legacy reminds us that there is always hope for healing and redemption.
