Massoud was born in Cairo, Egypt, to Coptic Christian parents. At a young age, he moved to Canada with his family and grew up in Markham, Ontario. Massoud attended St. Brother Andre Catholic High School, where he acted in several plays and musicals, including Footloose, Once Upon a Mattress, and Little Shop of Horrors.
After high school, Mena graduated from Ryerson University’s theatre program in Toronto. While at Ryerson, he co-founded the Evolving Artists theatre company, which produced an adaptation of Macbeth. Massoud made his cinematic debut in 2011, appearing in the thriller “What Happens Next”. Until 2014, he appeared in several minor roles in television shows, including “Combat Hospital,” “King,” and “Saving Hope.” In 2015, he appeared in “Heroes Reborn,” playing Chuck.
Massoud’s breakout role was in 2017 when he accepted the role of Tariq in the Amazon series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”. His performance was critical because it gave him the name recognition needed to be cast as Aladdin two years later. Mena Massoud had first auditioned for a chance at being Aladdin in the 2017 D23 convention. A year later he auditioned again, this time getting the lead role. For the part, he had to train every single day with a team of professionals for several months. Despite the challenges, Massoud brought the role of Aladdin to life.
Mena Massoud’s performance as Aladdin was highly praised for his ability to capture the character’s charm, musical numbers, and the right amount of naivete to make the character feel honest. His portrayal of Aladdin was also credited with being an improvement in representation of people of colour in media. Massoud would later reveal that he was hesitant about the lack of acting opportunities for Middle Eastern actors and his role in Aladdin would eventually give rise to more opportunities for young actors of Arab origin. Massoud also stated that being part of Aladdin was “one of the best experiences of my life.” The movie was a commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
In addition to his work on the screen, Mena Massoud is a philanthropist committed to using his platform to promote causes that he’s passionate about. As a Coptic Christian, he is actively involved in charity work that advocates for religious freedom in Egypt. He is also an ambassador for WE Charity and served as a speaker for the WE Day event in 2019.
Mena Massoud’s career has continued to grow since his success in Aladdin. He co-starred in Hulu’s TV comedy, “Reprisal,” in 2019 and has been cast in the upcoming thriller, “Run This Town,” alongside Nina Dobrev and Ben Platt.
In conclusion, Mena Massoud is an incredibly talented actor who has achieved a great deal at a young age. He is a role model for his dedicated work for charity causes in addition to his talent onscreen. He has demonstrated that Middle Eastern actors can achieve great success in the entertainment industry with hard work and perseverance. Massoud’s future is promising, and we’re excited to see what new roles he will take on in the future.
