Fragno is a small village in the Umbria region of Italy that is often overlooked by tourists. However, during my recent trip to Italy, I had the pleasure of visiting this hidden gem and it exceeded all my expectations. Here are my travel notes from my trip to Fragno.
How to Get There
Fragno is nestled within the rolling hills of Umbria and is accessible by car or train. I opted to take the train from Rome to Terni and then a local bus to Fragno. The journey takes about two hours, but the beautiful scenery makes it worthwhile.
Where to Stay
There are limited options for accommodations in Fragno, but I highly recommend staying at the B&B Convivium. The restored 15th-century building is located in the heart of the village and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. The hosts, Francesco and Marisa, are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable about the area.
What to Do
Fragno is the perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful and authentic Italian experience. Here are some activities that I recommend:
1. Explore the Village – Fragno may be small, but it is full of character and charm. Take a stroll through the cobblestone streets and admire the medieval architecture of the buildings.
2. Visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears – This sanctuary is located just outside of the village and dates back to the 15th century. The interior is adorned with stunning frescoes and there is a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for reflection.
3. Go Hiking – The surrounding hills of Fragno offer plenty of hiking trails that allow you to immerse yourself in the beautiful nature of Umbria. One trail that I highly recommend is the Path of the Three Sanctuaries, which takes you on a 10 km hike to three different sanctuaries.
4. Taste the Local Cuisine – Umbria is known for its simple and delicious cuisine, and Fragno is no exception. Visit one of the local trattorias and try the traditional dishes such as wild boar stew or truffle pasta.
Overall, Fragno is a hidden gem that is worth visiting on your next trip to Italy. The combination of stunning scenery, authentic Italian culture, and peacefulness make it the perfect destination for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of touristy cities.
