Male: A Gender That Shapes Society

The concept of gender plays a crucial role in shaping society. The way genders are perceived and treated impacts everything from social norms to the economy. And while both genders are important, today we’ll be discussing males and their role in shaping society.

Starting from the early years of civilization, men have been considered the hunters, gatherers, and protectors of their families. They were expected to defend their community and take on physically demanding jobs to provide for themselves and their loved ones. These roles also gave men certain privileges, such as the ability to own property, vote, and rule over their households.

However, as time passed, these roles became ingrained in society, leading to strict gender norms that limited both men and women. Men were expected to be emotionless, strong, dominant, and competitive. These expectations led to men stigmatizing vulnerability, mental health, and therapy. Furthermore, men were taught that toxic masculinity is the only way to be “manly,” causing mental distress and harm to themselves.

The advent of the feminist movement during the 20th century brought about significant shifts in public perception when it came to gender roles. Women gained more opportunities in the workplace, received more educational opportunities and developed independence to make their own decisions. However, while these changes brought about progress for women and non-binary individuals, men continued to cling on to outdated gender norms.

Now, in the 21st century, society is experiencing a significant shift in dynamics. Men are realizing that they no longer need to fit into a specific mold of masculinity to be socially accepted or successful. They are slowly recognizing the importance of vulnerability, empathy and mental health. In turn, this is changing how men perceive themselves and interact with others.

As a result, we are seeing significant changes in the roles that men are taking in society. Men are now taking on roles as caregivers, emotional supporters, and allies to women and other marginalized groups. The importance of fatherhood and raising children is now being given equal importance as earning a paycheck. And, in some cases, men are even choosing careers that have traditionally been viewed as ‘feminine,’ such as nursing or teaching, thus challenging gender stereotypes.

Additionally, men are now acknowledging, fighting against and taking the responsibility to change toxic masculinity. Society is finally beginning to see the devastating effects of men’s adherence to toxic masculinity, such as mass shootings, high suicide rates and a lack of communication skills amongst men, among other pressing issues. Men recognize that in order to break free from these negative stigmas, they must hold themselves accountable and be willing to make uncomfortable changes, and be open to discussion.

To conclude, while it may have taken time, men are finally starting to understand that gender dynamics are a social construct that they have the power to change. Through supporting gender equality, breaking free from toxic masculinity, and embracing empathy and vulnerability, men are slowly transforming society for the better. This shift is opening doors for both men and women to achieve more and redefine what it truly means to be “manly”. The fight against toxic gender norms is not over, but through working together and elevating the wellbeing of all genders, we could create a world where everyone can thrive.
