Madame Web

Madame Web is one of Marvel Comics’ most enigmatic characters, a powerful seer who provides guidance and advice to heroes from across the Spider-Verse.

Created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #210 in 1980 as Cassandra Webb, a blind elderly woman who was abducted and used as a laboratory experiment by the criminal organization, The Superior Tech. The experiment resulted in her gaining psychic powers, including clairvoyance, telepathy, and telekinesis.

She soon became a valuable ally to Spider-Man and other heroes, using her powers to provide guidance and advice in their battles against villains such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, and Venom.

Despite being physically incapacitated due to her blindness, Madame Web has proven to be a formidable opponent, able to defend herself and others through the use of her powers. In one memorable encounter, she sent Norman Osborn flying through a wall with a powerful telekinetic blast.

Over time, Madame Web’s character evolved beyond just a supporting role for Spider-Man, becoming a key figure in the Spider-Verse, an interconnected multiverse of heroes from alternate universes and realities.

She has served as a mentor and ally to a variety of Spider-powered characters, including Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, and the Scarlet Spider. She has also appeared in various Spider-Man animated series and video games.

One of Madame Web’s most significant storylines occurred in the classic Spider-Verse event, where she was revealed to be the anchor to the Multiverse, holding together the fabric of reality. This revelation also led to her death, sacrificing herself to save the entire multiverse from destruction.

Despite her death, Madame Web’s legacy lives on in the Spider-Verse, with her granddaughter, Charlotte Witter, taking up her mantle as the new Madame Web.

Madame Web’s character has also inspired adaptations in other media, such as the 1994 Spider-Man animated series and the 2018 animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where she was voiced by actress Lily Tomlin.

In the film, Madame Web appears briefly as a cameo, acknowledging her importance to the Spider-Verse mythos. Her presence in the film is also a nod to the comic book storyline, where she played a critical role in the heroes’ victory against the villainous Inheritors.
