Ambrose received an outstanding education and went on to become a lawyer. He was known for his excellent rhetoric skills, which eventually led him to become the governor of Aemilia-Liguria, which was an important province in Italy. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was appointed as the Bishop of Milan.
At the time, there was a power struggle between the Arian heretics, who believed that Jesus was created by the Father, and the orthodox Christians who believed that Jesus was truly God. Even though he had no theological training, Saint Ambrose was able to take charge as Bishop of Milan and lead the orthodox Christians in this bitter struggle.
Saint Ambrose’s preaching was so powerful that it even converted the Emperor Theodosius, who had previously been an Arian. When the Emperor ordered the massacre of seven thousand people in Thessalonica, Saint Ambrose was the only one who stood up to him, refusing to allow him to enter the Church or receive communion until he repented.
Saint Ambrose was also an accomplished musician and wrote many hymns that are still sung in the Church today. He was also a prolific author, with many of his works still being read by Christians today. His most famous work, “On the Mysteries,” is a beautiful reflection on the sacraments that has been used by the Church for over a thousand years.
Saint Ambrose lived a simple life, even though he was a bishop. He gave up his wealth and donated it to the poor, insisting that the Church should also be free from the influence of money. He was known for his humility and his willingness to put others before himself.
Saint Ambrose died in Milan in 397 AD, and his death was marked by great sadness in the Church. His body was buried in the crypt of the Church of San Vittore, but it was later transferred to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, which was built in his honor.
Today, Saint Ambrose is still remembered as one of the greatest theologians of the early Church. His preaching and writings continue to inspire Christians throughout the world. His life is a reminder that even the most accomplished people can remain humble, put others first, and serve God with their whole heart.
