History
The LA Galaxy was one of the ten charter members of MLS, and the team played its first game in April 1996. The team’s name and logo were chosen to reflect the city’s connection to the entertainment industry. The team played its home games at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, which had a capacity of over 90,000. The team’s first coach was Lothar Osiander, and its first captain was Italian midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos.
In 2003, the team moved to the Home Depot Center, now known as Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California. The stadium has a capacity of just over 27,000 and is shared with local rivals, LAFC. The Galaxy has won an MLS Cup and three Supporters’ Shields since moving to the stadium.
Notable players
The LA Galaxy has had some incredible players over the years, but none more famous than David Beckham. The English midfielder signed with the team in 2007, at the height of his fame. He helped the team win two MLS Cups and elevated the profile of MLS in the process. Beckham has since retired but remains a significant figure in the sport.
Another notable player is Landon Donovan, who is considered one of the greatest American soccer players. Donovan played for the Galaxy for 10 seasons, winning four MLS Cups and becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer. Donovan retired in 2018 but continues to work in the sport as a coach and commentator.
Other notable players for the LA Galaxy include Robbie Keane, who won three MLS Cups with the team, and also played with Beckham. Carlos Ruiz, the Guatemalan striker who scored more than 80 goals in MLS, played for the Galaxy from 2002-2005 and 2008-2009.
Future prospects
The current LA Galaxy team is in a rebuilding phase after a disappointing 2020 season. The team finished tenth in the Western Conference and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The team has made several signings in the offseason, including Argentine defender Jorge Villafaña and Mexican midfielder Carlos Harvey.
The team’s captain is Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who signed with the team in 2020. Hernandez has had a successful career in Europe, playing for Manchester United and Real Madrid, among others. Still, he struggled in his first season in MLS, scoring only two goals. However, with the team making new signings and a new coach, Greg Vanney, bringing in new tactics, the team is looking to improve on last season’s performance.
