Kim Jong-il died in December 2011, reportedly from a heart attack while traveling by train. His son, Kim Jong-un, succeeded him as leader and has continued many of his policies. The North Korean regime remains one of the most isolated and oppressive in the world, with a poor economy, a highly controlled society, and a large military.
