Josh McDaniels is a name that has definitely made its way into the NFL’s history books. From his beginnings as a coach with the New England Patriots to his recent success with the Indianapolis Colts, McDaniels has proven time and time again that he has what it takes to be a great NFL coach.
As a young man, McDaniels was already interested in football. He played in high school and went on to attend both John Carroll University and the University of Michigan. At Michigan, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under legendary head coach Lloyd Carr.
After graduation, McDaniels entered the NFL as a personnel assistant with the Patriots. He quickly worked his way up through the ranks, becoming an offensive assistant and then the quarterbacks coach. As the quarterback coach, he helped develop Tom Brady into the future Hall of Fame player he is today.
In 2006, McDaniels became the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. This was a significant step up for him, and he did not disappoint. In his first year as coordinator, McDaniels helped lead the Patriots to an undefeated regular season, and they went on to the Super Bowl, where they lost in a shocking upset to the New York Giants.
Despite the loss, the Patriots’ offense had a record-breaking season, and McDaniels was praised for his contributions. However, his future with the team was uncertain. A few years later, McDaniels left the Patriots to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos.
His time in Denver was rocky, to say the least. He started off strong, winning his first six games as head coach. But things quickly went downhill from there. The team finished that season with an 8-8 record, and the following year they were 3-9 before McDaniels was fired.
Despite the rocky start to his head coaching career, McDaniels did not give up. After taking a year off from coaching, he returned to the Patriots as their offensive coordinator once again. He continued to excel in this role, and he helped lead the team to two more Super Bowl victories.
In 2018, McDaniels got another shot at being a head coach, this time with the Indianapolis Colts. He accepted the job, but then pulled out at the last minute. This decision was heavily criticized and left many questioning McDaniels’ character.
However, the Colts were not deterred. They hired Frank Reich as their head coach, and he led the team to a wild-card playoff victory in his first year. McDaniels stayed with the Patriots but continued to interview for head coaching positions with other teams.
Then, in 2021, McDaniels got a second chance with the Patriots. This time, he was named the team’s head coach. He has a lot to live up to, following in the footsteps of legendary coach Bill Belichick. But McDaniels seems up to the challenge.
Josh McDaniels has had a rollercoaster of a coaching career so far. He has experienced the highs of success and the lows of failure. But through it all, he has remained dedicated to his craft and determined to succeed. His drive and passion for football have made him a respected figure in the NFL, and he will undoubtedly continue to leave his mark on the league.
