Independence Day: Resurgence – A Review

Independence Day was a massive blockbuster hit back in 1996, showcasing the incredible talent of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. Since then, fans of the alien invasion franchise have been anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, which hit theaters in 2016. The war rages on, as humanity takes on a new wave of extraterrestrial invaders in this action-packed thriller.

What’s the Plot?

Twenty years after the events of the first film, Independence Day: Resurgence sees the Earth again under threat from an alien invasion. The human race has adapted the alien technology from the previous conflict, and now has powerful defenses in place against any future attacks. But when a colossal spaceship arrives on Earth, the force field protecting it decimates the world’s metropolitan areas like London, Paris, and Los Angeles. With the clock ticking down, two factions led by returning cast members President Whitmore and David Levinson, and newcomers Dyaln Hiller and Chinese pilot Su Fin, must unite to save the planet from the new danger.

The Good

The massive scale of the film raises the stakes beyond what was previously touched upon in the first movie. We see advanced technology, explosive action, and an immense amount of destruction on a global level, making it a worthy successor to the original. The special effects and CGI are truly breathtaking, making for a visual spectacle that is unforgettable. Liam Hemsworth’s performance as Hiller is impressive, and he portrays the character with a charming likability that helps you root for him in the face of danger.

The Bad

While Resurgence tries to link itself to the first movie by bringing back original characters, there is a sense of lackluster behind their performances. Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson, for example, typically lacks a presence in the film, and his intelligence and bravery are often overshadowed by the newer cast. While the action is adequately entertaining, the film might have benefited from a greater emphasis on characterization and a more engaging screenplay.
