The much-awaited sequel to Disney-Pixar’s 2004 hit movie ‘The Incredibles’ is finally here, and it has been worth every second of the wait. Incredibles 2 takes off from where the first one left, without skipping a beat in the story, animation, and action.

The movie picks up from where the Parr family left off after saving the city from the villain Syndrome. The Supers are still illegal, and the family – Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible), Helen Parr (Elastigirl), Violet Parr (Invisible girl), and Dash Parr (Dash) – are reeling from a fallout with the government. But they have bigger problems at hand – an insidious villain who wants to control the world, and they have to come together to thwart the dastardly plan.

The movie is loaded with spectacular action sequences, and the animation is top-notch, a benchmark for superhero movies. The Parr family undergoes some role reversals this time, with Mr. Incredible handling the children at home while Helen goes out to fight crime under the guise of a campaign to legalize Supers. The switch in roles gives rise to some truly hilarious situations, most of them involving Mr. Incredible trying to handle the superpowers of his children.

The superhero family is as relatable as ever, and the audience is sure to be emotionally invested in their journey. The character arcs of Helen, Bob, and especially Violet and Jack-Jack, are particularly fascinating. The chemistry between the characters is spot-on, and the humor – a mix of slapstick and wry wit – is endearing.

Elastigirl’s adventures steal the show. Her chases, jumps, and stunts are exhilarating, and she pulls them off with effortless grace. The villain, Screenslaver, poses an interesting dilemma to the superheroes, and the themes of media, perception and control are explored with genuine thought. One of the movie’s strongest points is that it doesn’t underestimate the intelligence of its target audience. It challenges its viewers to think, question, and engage with the story, rather than spoon-feeding them with cliches.

Incredibles 2 is not without its flaws. The story is predictable, and the villain reveal is slightly underwhelming. Some of the new characters, like Voyd and Evelyne, don’t get enough screen time to make an impact, which is a shame because they are intriguing. But these can be overlooked, considering the sheer scope and ambition of the film.

The movie is a triumph for writer-director Brad Bird, who has crafted another superhero movie that doesn’t fall prey to the trappings of the genre. Bird balances the serious and the silly elements with panache, and he weaves numerous plot threads seamlessly without losing the essence of the story.
