My day usually begins with preparing food for the day’s service. This involves chopping and slicing vegetables, preparing meats, weighing and measuring ingredients, and making sauces and dressings. I also ensure that our kitchen is clean, organized, and stocked with all the necessary ingredients and cooking equipment.
Once the kitchen is set up, the orders start rolling in, and the atmosphere becomes intense. The heat, noise, and pressure can be overwhelming for some people. However, for us who work in the kitchen, it is just a part of the job.
When an order comes in, we move fast and work together as a team. Every member of the kitchen staff has a specific role to play, and we must execute our tasks flawlessly to make sure that all the dishes are sent out on time and cooked to perfection.
Sometimes, things don’t go according to plan, and we must find creative solutions to resolve any issues. With various members of the kitchen team bringing their experience and knowledge to the table, it’s always a bit of a learning experience. A strong team dynamic is crucial in such an environment, and it takes excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to changing situations makes it work harmoniously.
In addition to cooking, I am responsible for cleaning and washing dishes. This is crucial to prevent cross-contamination and maintain high hygiene standards in the kitchen. I must also pay attention to food safety regulations, such as storing food at the correct temperature and labeling and rotating food products.
While the work can be grueling, the satisfaction of seeing a happy customer makes it all worth it. When a diner compliments the food, or I see an empty plate come back from the dining area, it is a moment of unbridled joy and satisfaction.
Being a kitchen assistant cook requires not only excellent cooking skills but also a positive attitude, teamwork, and time management skills. There is no room for complacency in a professional kitchen as the food industry is highly competitive.
My work as a kitchen assistant cook has taught me valuable lessons such as discipline in the workplace, the importance of teamwork, and the impact of perfectionism. The kitchen can be a chaotic environment, but it is also one of the most satisfying experiences when seeing happy customers and satisfied chef friends.
To anyone who is considering working in the kitchen, I would say that it can be a tough and unpredictable job, but it is also one of the most rewarding. It is where innovation, creativity and teamwork come together to deliver delicious food. If you are passionate about food and hard-working, then it is a job worth considering.
