Having lived in Italy for a few months now, I’ve come to realize one thing – there’s no such thing as a bad Italian meal. Each region has its unique flavors and specialties that draw you in and leave you wanting more. And it was no different when I found myself having lunch at the Masseria in Puglia.

The Masseria is an old fortified farmhouse that has been given a new lease of life as a luxurious boutique hotel and restaurant. The building dates back to the 16th century and has been restored with great care to maintain its original charm and character.

As I walked around the stunning property, admiring the ancient olive trees and breathtaking countryside views, I was struck by how warm and welcoming everyone was. The staff were attentive and friendly, genuinely excited to share their love of Puglia’s cuisine with us.

Though we had come for lunch, we were treated to an incredible spread of local produce that was set out before us, each dish more tantalizing than the last. Freshly baked bread, tangy cheeses, wafer-thin slices of prosciutto – I could feel my mouth salivating.

One dish that stood out was the orecchiette pasta with fresh tomato sauce. The pasta, made by hand, was cooked al dente and paired perfectly with the crisp, flavorful sauce. In fact, I could almost taste the care and attention that had gone into making each element of the dish.

But what would a meal in Puglia be without seafood? The chefs at the Masseria source their seafood locally, ensuring that only the freshest, most sustainable produce is used in their dishes. The grilled octopus, served with a bold and zesty gremolata, was cooked to perfection – tender but still slightly firm.

And then came the desserts. As I savored a piece of the creamy ricotta cheesecake drizzled with rich chocolate sauce, I couldn’t help but feel that this was the perfect ending to an unforgettable meal.

Of course, the food was only one part of the Masseria experience. The landscape and the property added much to the ambiance. The picturesque setting of the Masseria conveyed a sense of calm and serenity that was hard to put into words. Sitting out on the terrace surrounded by the beauty of Puglia, the wind gently blowing through my hair, it was easy to see how this region has inspired countless artists and creatives over the years.

In some ways, I felt that the Masseria was representative of everything that is special about Puglia. The blend of old and new, the appreciation for quality, and the love of good food all combined to create an unforgettable experience.

As I left the Masseria after a long and leisurely afternoon, I felt content – a perfect combination of well-fed, well-rested, and well-cared for. The Masseria is one place that I will surely return to for another gastronomic adventure. And if you find yourself in Puglia, I suggest you make time to do the same. You won’t be disappointed!
