Milan and Lapland might seem like polar opposites in terms of climate, but little did I know that a direct flight between the two takes you on a thrilling adventure to the Arctic winter wonderland. Recently, I embarked on a journey from Milan Malpensa Airport to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, and what unfolded was a truly magical experience.
As I boarded the flight, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity. How different would Lapland be from the bustling and fashionable streets of Milan? The moment the plane touched down in Rovaniemi, all my questions were answered. I was greeted by a vast expanse of untouched snow, magnificent forests, and the crisp, fresh air that one can only associate with the Arctic region.
Rovaniemi, dubbed as “the official hometown of Santa Claus,” stands as a gateway to the Arctic. As soon as I stepped off the plane, the festive atmosphere engulfed me. Rovaniemi is home to Santa Claus Village, a place where Christmas is celebrated all year round. From the moment I arrived, I was transported into a magical world filled with enchanting activities and discoveries.
One of the highlights of my trip was meeting Santa Claus himself. As I entered Santa Claus Village, I was greeted by the man in red and white, listening to the wishes and dreams of children from around the world. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to capture a photo with Santa Claus and experience the warmth and joy that surrounds him.
Exploring the village, I came across the enchanting Arctic Circle line. Standing at the line, I found myself straddling two hemispheres simultaneously. It was a surreal feeling to be in two places at once, a tangible reminder of the wonders and unique experiences that Lapland has to offer.
Eager to experience more of the Arctic wilderness, I decided to embark on a thrilling husky safari. As the sled glided through the snow-covered landscapes, and the huskies pulled us along, I was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of nature. The silence, interrupted only by the sound of the dogs’ paws brushing through the snow, was remarkably serene. This unforgettable experience allowed me to connect with Lapland’s magnificent nature and wildlife.
To truly immerse myself in the Arctic lifestyle, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to witness the stunning Northern Lights. I embarked on an expedition that took me far away from the city lights into the wilderness, where the chances of witnessing this captivating natural phenomenon were at their highest. Wrapped in warm clothing, with eyes fixed on the sky, I gazed in awe as swirls of vibrant colors danced above me. It was a breathtaking spectacle that left me in a state of wonder and amazement.
Lapland is not just about Santa Claus and the Northern Lights; it is also home to the indigenous Sami people, who have preserved their centuries-old traditions and way of life. I visited a traditional Sami village, where I learned about their rich culture, reindeer herding, and the art of making traditional handicrafts. Sitting around a warm fire inside a traditional Sami tent, listening to their stories and songs, I gained a deep appreciation for their way of life in harmony with nature.
Leaving Lapland was bittersweet. As I boarded the return flight to Milan, I carried with me memories of an extraordinary adventure in a winter wonderland. From meeting Santa Claus to witnessing the Northern Lights and experiencing the Sami culture, I discovered that Lapland offers a world of captivating experiences that allow you to escape the mundane and explore the enchantment of the Arctic.
