Step 1: Call for help
The first thing you should do when you find a person who has collapsed and is unresponsive is to call for emergency services. The emergency services will send an ambulance to the location and provide instructions over the phone.
Step 2: Check the patient
After calling emergency services, proceed to check the patient for responsiveness. Gently shake the patient and ask if they are okay. If the patient is unresponsive, tilt their head back and check for any breathing. Place your ear close to their mouth to listen for breathing sounds. If the person is not breathing, you should proceed to use the defibrillator.
Step 3: Turn on the defibrillator
The defibrillator will have an on/off button. Turn it on to begin the process.
Step 4: Attach the pads
The defibrillator will come with two sticky pads. Remove the protective covering and place the pads on the patient’s chest. The correct placement of the pads is important, as incorrect placement can cause the defibrillator to deliver an ineffective shock.
The first pad should be placed on the top right side of the chest, just below the collarbone. The second pad should be placed on the left side of the chest, just below the armpit. The pads should be placed at least two inches away from any implanted devices such as pacemakers.
Step 5: Follow the instructions
After attaching the pads, follow the instructions provided by the defibrillator. Some models may provide verbal instructions, while others may display the instructions on a screen.
Step 6: Deliver a shock
Once the defibrillator has analyzed the patient’s heartbeat, it may recommend delivering a shock. Ensure that no one is touching the patient and follow the instructions to deliver a shock. The shock is delivered by pressing the button provided on the defibrillator.
Step 7: Continue CPR
After delivering the shock, continue performing CPR until the ambulance arrives. Remember to check the patient’s breathing and pulse frequently.
Some important things to remember when using a defibrillator:
1. Always ensure that the patient’s chest is dry before attaching the pads to prevent any interference.
2. If the patient has a hairy chest, shave the areas where the pads will be placed.
3. Do not use the defibrillator on a patient who has a pulse or is breathing.
4. Ensure that no one is touching the patient when delivering a shock.
5. Always follow the instructions provided by the defibrillator.
In conclusion, using a defibrillator can save a life. Knowing how to use one can make a difference between life and death during an emergency. Remember to always call emergency services before using a defibrillator and follow the instructions provided. With more defibrillators available in public places, it is important to be equipped with the knowledge of using these lifesaving devices.
