Gather the Tools You’ll Need
Before you begin measuring, make sure you have the following tools handy:
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or pen
- Notepad or paper
Step 1: Determine the Curtain Rod Width
The width of your curtain rod will determine the width of your curtains. Measure the curtain rod from end to end, not including any decorative finials. Write down this measurement and move on to the next step.
Step 2: Measure the Curtain Rod Height
Measure the height from the top of the curtain rod to where you want your curtains to fall. Most curtains hang either just above the windowsill or all the way to the floor. Note down this measurement as well.
Step 3: Calculate the Width of Each Curtain Panel
Divide the width of your curtain rod by the number of curtain panels you plan to hang. This will give you the width of each individual curtain panel. Since curtains should have a full and luxurious look, it’s recommended that you double the width of your window to achieve proper fullness. Note down this measurement and proceed to the next step.
Step 4: Determine the Length of Each Curtain Panel
For curtains that fall above the windowsill, measure from the top of the curtain rod to your desired length. Subtract around 1 to 2 inches from this measurement to allow for proper clearance. If you prefer floor-length curtains, measure from the top of the curtain rod all the way to the floor. Again, remember to subtract 1 to 2 inches for clearance. Record this measurement as well.
Step 5: Additional Considerations
There are a few additional factors to consider when measuring for curtains:
- Pattern Repeat: If you’re opting for patterned curtains, keep in mind the pattern repeat. This is the distance between a pattern’s starting point and where it begins again. Make sure to measure with pattern repeat in mind to ensure a seamless look.
- Curtain Header: The curtain header refers to the top part of the curtains where they attach to the rod. Take note of the header style you prefer, as this may affect your measurements.
- Fabric Allowance: If you’re getting custom curtains made, don’t forget to account for some extra fabric allowance. Ask your curtain supplier for guidance on the ideal allowance for your chosen style.
By following these simple steps and taking accurate measurements, you can ensure that your curtains will fit perfectly and enhance the overall aesthetic of your home. Remember, when in doubt, it’s always best to consult with a professional curtain supplier who can guide you through the measuring process and offer expert advice on choosing the right curtains for your space.
