What You’ll Need
- One ripe pineapple
- A cutting board
- A sharp knife
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Before you start cutting, make sure you have a clean and spacious workspace. Place your cutting board on a stable surface, preferably one that won’t be damaged by the knife.
Step 2: Wash and Dry the Pineapple
Wash the pineapple thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or impurities. Once washed, pat it dry with a clean cloth or paper towel to prevent slipping while you’re slicing.
Step 3: Remove the Crown and Base
Using a sharp knife, cut off the crown of the pineapple (the leafy green top) and the base (the bottom end). Dispose of these parts or save the crown for decoration purposes.
Step 4: Stand the Pineapple Upright
Position the pineapple vertically on your cutting board, with the flat, cut base sitting firmly against the board. This will stabilize the pineapple and make slicing easier.
Step 5: Slice Off the Skin
Starting from the top, carefully slide your knife down the sides of the pineapple, following its curved shape. Remove the tough, spiky skin, making sure to cut just deep enough to remove it, but not waste any flesh.
Step 6: Remove Remaining “Eyes”
Now, look closely at your skinned pineapple. You will notice small “eyes” scattered across its surface. To remove them, angle your knife and gently cut diagonal lines – about 1 inch apart – in a spiral pattern around the pineapple until all the eyes are gone.
Step 7: Choose Your Slicing Style
There are two common ways to slice pineapple: rings or spears. Choose your preferred style depending on the intended use and presentation of the pineapple.
Step 8: Slice into Rings
If you opted for rings, lay the pineapple horizontally on the cutting board. Cut straight down, making smooth, even slices – about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick – until you reach the bottom.
Step 9: Slice into Spears
If you prefer spears, stand the pineapple on one of its flat sides. Slice the pineapple vertically, parallel to its core, into multiple long and even pieces. Adjust the width according to your preference.
Step 10: Enjoy Your Freshly Sliced Pineapple
Now that you have skillfully affettato ananas, you can indulge in its delightful sweetness. Enjoy your freshly sliced pineapple on its own, use it in recipes, or share it with friends and family!
