What You’ll Need
- Sweatshirt
- Measuring tape
- Fabric chalk or pencil
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Pins
Step 1: Measure and Mark
Start by putting on your sweatshirt and determining how much you want to shorten it. Use the measuring tape to measure the desired length from the bottom of the sweatshirt. Once you have decided on the length, mark it with fabric chalk or pencil.
Step 2: Prepare Sweatshirt for Cutting
Lay your sweatshirt flat on a table or any other flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles to ensure accurate cutting. Use the measuring tape and fabric chalk or pencil to draw a straight line across the sweatshirt, following the marks you made in the previous step.
Step 3: Cut the Sweatshirt
Carefully cut along the marked line using sharp scissors. Make sure to follow the line precisely to ensure an even finish. Take your time and be cautious to avoid accidentally cutting through both layers of the sweatshirt.
Step 4: Finish the Hem
To prevent the cut edge from fraying, it’s important to finish the hem. Fold about ¼ inch of the fabric towards the inside of the sweatshirt and use pins to secure it in place. You can iron the fold for a neater finish, but be cautious with heat-sensitive fabrics.
Step 5: Sew the Hem
Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew along the folded edge of the hem to secure it. If using a machine, use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch for added durability. If sewing by hand, make small and neat stitches along the edge. Remove the pins as you go along.
Step 6: Try It On
Once you have finished sewing the hem, try the sweatshirt on to ensure the length is now perfect. If it fits to your satisfaction, you’re done! If you feel it still needs adjusting, you can repeat the steps and make further alterations.
Shortening a sweatshirt doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a little bit of time and effort, you can customize your sweatshirt to fit you perfectly. Remember to measure and mark accurately, and take your time with the cutting and sewing process. Now that you’ve learned how to shorten a sweatshirt, go ahead and give it a try. You’ll be amazed at the difference it can make!
