What You’ll Need
- Skirt
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Needle and thread
- Sewing pins
- Iron
Step 1: Determine the Desired Length
Start by putting on the skirt and folding the excess fabric at the waist to reach your desired length. Use a measuring tape to measure the length from your waist to the desired hemline. Take note of this measurement as it will be crucial for the next steps.
Step 2: Remove the Waistband
Carefully remove the waistband from the skirt using a seam ripper or small scissors. Be cautious not to damage the fabric. Once the waistband is removed, set it aside as you’ll need it later.
Step 3: Measure and Mark the Fabric
Lay the skirt flat on a surface and measure the distance between the new desired waistline and the existing waistline. Subtract this measurement from the original length of the skirt (noted in Step 1). This will give you the amount of fabric you need to remove from the top.
Using sewing pins, mark the new waistline on the skirt. Make sure the marks are evenly spaced to ensure a symmetrical alteration.
Step 4: Trim and Hem the Skirt
Carefully trim the excess fabric above the marked waistline. Remember to leave a little extra fabric for the hem. Once trimmed, fold the new waistline inwards, about 1/2 an inch, and press it with an iron. Pin the folded fabric in place, ready for sewing.
Using a sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew along the folded waistline to secure the new hem. Make sure your stitches are neat and secure, as this will determine how well the skirt fits and hangs.
Step 5: Reattach the Waistband
Take the waistband you removed earlier and measure it against the new waistline. Trim any excess length if necessary. Position the waistband over the new waistline, aligning the edges, and pin it in place.
Now, carefully sew the waistband back onto the skirt, ensuring it is securely attached. You can hand-sew or use a sewing machine depending on your expertise.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
After sewing the waistband, give the skirt a final press with an iron to make sure everything is neat and in place. Trim any loose threads and try on your newly shortened skirt!
Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t perfect. With time, you’ll become more confident in altering your skirts to achieve the perfect length.
Shortening a skirt at the waist is a fantastic way to customize your clothing to suit your style and body shape. Now that you’re equipped with these easy tips and tricks, you can confidently tackle any skirt that needs a shorter hemline.
