Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary materials on hand:
- A polo shirt that needs to be shortened
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1: Determine the Desired Length
Start by trying on the polo shirt and determining how much shorter you want it to be. Measure the desired length from the bottom hem of the shirt and mark it with a pin. Make sure to do this on both sides to ensure accuracy.
Step 2: Mark the Cutting Line
Next, lay the polo shirt on a flat surface and use the measuring tape to mark a straight cutting line from the bottom hem to the pins you previously inserted. Make sure the line is even on both sides.
Step 3: Cut Along the Marked Line
Using a pair of sharp fabric scissors, carefully cut along the marked cutting line. Take your time to ensure a clean and straight cut.
Step 4: Secure the Raw Edge
To prevent the fabric from fraying, you’ll need to secure the raw edge. You can achieve this by using either a sewing machine or a needle and thread. If using a sewing machine, simply sew a straight stitch along the raw edge. If hand-sewing, use a basic running stitch to secure the fabric.
Step 5: Hem the Shirt
To create a clean and professional-looking finish, it’s time to hem the shirt. Fold the raw edge over to the desired length and pin it in place. Then, using either a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew a straight stitch along the folded edge to secure it.
Step 6: Remove Excess Thread
Finally, remove any excess thread and give your newly shortened polo shirt a quick press with an iron to smooth out any wrinkles.
And voila! Your polo shirt is now the perfect length. Go ahead and confidently rock your updated wardrobe staple.
Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t turn out as expected. Keep experimenting and soon you’ll be a pro at shortening your polo shirts.
Happy sewing!
