What You Will Need
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
- Bench vice
- Sharpening stone
- Flat file
- Angle gauge
- Lubricating oil
- Clean cloth
Step 1: Safety First!
Before you begin, ensure you put on your safety goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
Step 2: Remove the Knives
Remove the planer knives from the planer. Check the user manual for specific instructions on how to do this for your particular model.
Step 3: Secure the Knife in a Bench Vice
Take one knife at a time and secure it in a bench vice, ensuring it is stable and won’t move during the sharpening process.
Step 4: Assess the Knife
Inspect the knife for any chips or imperfections. If there are any major damages, it’s best to replace the knife rather than attempting to sharpen it.
Step 5: Determine the Bevel Angle
Use an angle gauge to determine the bevel angle of the knife. Most planer knives have a bevel angle of around 25 degrees.
Step 6: Sharpening the Knife
Hold the knife firmly in the bench vice and use a sharpening stone or a flat file to sharpen the beveled edge at the determined angle. Move the sharpening tool along the edge in smooth, consistent strokes. Remember to maintain the angle throughout the process.
Step 7: Check for Burr
After sharpening one side of the knife, check for a burr by lightly running your finger on the back of the knife’s edge. If you feel a slight ridge, it means you have successfully created a burr on the beveled side.
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
Flip the knife and repeat the sharpening process on the other side, making sure to maintain the same angle and stroke pattern.
Step 9: Remove the Burr
Remove the burr by lightly running a flat file or sharpening stone along the back of the knife’s edge. This will create a smooth, sharp edge.
Step 10: Oiling the Knives
Apply a few drops of lubricating oil to each knife to prevent rusting and ensure smooth operation.
Step 11: Reinstall the Knives
Clean the knives with a cloth to remove any debris and reinstall them back into the planer, following the user manual instructions.
Congratulations!
You have successfully sharpened your planer knives. Give it a test run, and you should notice a significant improvement in your planer’s performance. Remember to regularly inspect and sharpen your planer knives to maintain their efficiency. Happy planing!
