What You’ll Need
- A straight razor
- A sharpening stone (preferably a 1000/3000 grit combination stone)
- A strop
- A honing guide (optional)
- A towel
- Water or honing oil
Step 1: Preparing the Stone
Before you begin sharpening, it’s important to soak your sharpening stone in water for about 10-15 minutes. This allows the stone to absorb moisture and prevents excessive wear on the blade. If you’re using an oil stone, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for proper preparation.
Step 2: Setting the Blade Angle
If you’re new to straight razor sharpening, using a honing guide can be helpful in maintaining a consistent blade angle. However, experienced shavers may choose to hone freehand. Set the honing guide to a 20-25 degree angle or adjust your hand position accordingly.
Step 3: Honing the Blade
Apply a few drops of water or honing oil to the sharpening stone. Place the razor on the stone with the blade flat against the surface. Using gentle pressure, move the blade in a sweeping motion along the length of the stone, starting from the heel to the tip. Repeat this process 10-20 times on one side before flipping the razor to sharpen the other side.
Step 4: Stropping the Razor
Once you’re satisfied with the sharpness achieved through honing, it’s time to strop the razor. Attach the strop to a stable surface and ensure it is taut. Hold the razor by the tang and, using light pressure, glide it along the length of the strop. Start with the canvas side, followed by the leather side, repeating this process 20-30 times on each side of the razor.
Step 5: Testing the Sharpness
To check the sharpness of your straight razor, carefully run your thumb along the blade’s edge. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure. A properly sharpened razor should provide a smooth and effortless shave. If you encounter resistance or snagging, additional honing might be required.
Sharpening a straight razor by hand may seem intimidating at first, but with practice, it can become a rewarding part of your grooming routine. Remember to follow these steps diligently, exercise patience and caution, and enjoy the satisfaction of achieving a finely honed blade. Happy shaving!
